Completed: 2012
This rebuilding project encompassed more than 60,000 square feet of renovation, and 330,000 square feet of new construction. A 266-bed acute-care hospital, central plant, parking structure, and two support buildings were constructed from the ground up, while the Merle Norman Pavilion endured a major renovation. The multi-phased execution spanned 10 years in order to keep the hospital operational during construction.
The campus frontage is prominently positioned within the neighborhood, so tree-lined entrances and courtyards convey a welcoming overlay to the community. Traditional UCLA architecture characterizes the building’s facade, while the interior floor plan promotes family interaction, flexibility and logical circulation. SKA’s signage program presents consistent identification, directional, informative, and regulatory information underscored by a logical room numbering system. Designs follow existing UCLA sign standards although they are adapted to fit the prevailing architectural conditions. Existing campus signs were retrofitted as appropriate, and temporary construction graphics helped ease circulation during the transition. SKA also developed donor recognition opportunities that were incorporated at select locations.
