While the community’s roots are in agriculture, modern Pomona is a diverse community of artists, students, scholars, businesses and industries. At the turn of the 21st century, the downtown district was in economic decline and did not properly reflect the local diversity or talent pool. City Council responded by adopting a revitalization plan to stimulate business in the area, and SKA was contracted to bring their expertise to the project.
SKA started by updating district branding with motifs inspired by the local mission-style architecture. The color palette of sage, yellow and grey was culled from the regional landscape. A menu of sign types serve to increase visibility of key destinations, accommodate greater traffic volume, and support safety improvements. Primary corridors were lined with high-profile signs that lead to the transit center, city offices and array of retailers.
