Los Angeles City Hall has appeared in numerous movies and television shows, making it a Hollywood symbol as well as one of the most-recognizable architectural landmarks in California. The iconic structure was built in 1928 and endured several major earthquakes. When the 1994 earthquake caused City Hall to be evacuated, its fate hung in the balance, so activists joined the City in launching Project Restore, a renovation campaign that would ensure the building’s structural integrity and repair sustained damages. They contracted a team of experts to preserve the distinctive façade, interior mosaics, articulated ceiling and period ornamental details while introducing state-of-the-art seismic technology. SKA provided signage expertise to this team.
SKA’s first efforts addressed code-required sign issues and upgrades for compliance. Next, SKA developed non-code signage for public lobbies, corridors, elevator lobbies, council chambers, and conference rooms. SKA crafted a modern Art Deco design characterized by cast bronze, brass and gold leafing that is synchronous with the overall preservation intent.
