Moving toward their goal of total sustainability, the Airport Commission activated a major construction program that included a new International Terminal. To support this facility, Garages A and G were built, providing 1,436 and 1,698 parking stalls respectively.
SKA developed a wayfinding signage system to supplement existing signage, and identify pedestrian egress to terminal walkways, elevators, AirTrain and BART stations. SKA’s design introduced brushstroke sketches of regional landmarks, which are used on key wayfinding elements to enhance orientation.
Subsequent to opening of the updated International Terminal and new airport transit system, the Airport Commission authorized improvements to the five-level, 5700-space central garage, which serves the domestic terminal. SKA assessed existing signage to determine where existing signs could be retrofitted and supplemental wayfinding added. A color-coding system distinguishes the structure, while hand-drawn regional icons support wayfinding orientation. Sign cabinets hold changeable message panels to accommodate airline carrier changes.
